Welcome to our Photovoice for Online Safety Initiative

Your voices can inspire change, and a new digital age where people are valued more than profits.

This initiative was started by a Coalition of young people and adults determined to see federal policymakers take action to make online spaces safe for Gen Z and future generations. As a member of Gen Z, you have lived much of your life in a 24/7 digital world. We want members of Congress to understand what that has been like for you.

Photovoice Guidelines
  • To participate you must be 13 to 26 years of age.
  • Please be mindful of other people’s privacy – no doxxing.
  • Identifiable individuals (persons who could reasonably be recognized), other than yourself, who appear in your submission must fill out this online release form.
  • If under 18, a parent/legal guardian must complete this online minor release form
  • Here are sample photos of the kind of exposures that you, a friend, or a family member may have experienced online.
Getting Started

Step 1: Think about your experiences with social media and how the constant distraction, cyberbullying, hate speech, predators, and drug trafficking, have impacted your well-being. If you could go back in time and not join social media, would you?

Step 2: Use photos (up to three), or video/audio recording (up to 5 minutes) to depict how social media has impacted your life. Recordings should be done, in a quiet space, with the phone held vertically. Please start with your first name and age.

SUGGESTED PROMPTS for video or audio

1 – Being on my phone or social media makes me feel ______________.

2 – If you could go back in time and not join social media, would you?

3 – If you and all of your friends/peers were not on social media, how would that change your day-to-day life? (i.e. sleep, academics, social time, relationships?)

The video should feel as personal and informal as possible. To that end, please film vertically on your phone, as if you’re sending a video to a friend or family member.

  • Please find a place that’s quiet
  • Find a spot where the light hits the front of your face instead of at your back
  • Hold the camera at eye level, looking directly into the lens
  • Please start the video with your first name, age, and the city and state you live in (ex: I’m Laura, I’m 19 and live in Woodstock, Illinois)

  • iPhone  (newer versions preferred for better quality)
  • Ring light (if lighting is dim or poor)
  • Stand for the phone if needed.
Chance to Win $100 (and more)

Submit your photovoice via the form below on or before May 31, 2024, and become eligible for a random drawing. Five people will be randomly picked to receive $100 cash cards, and if interested, to share their stories with a Congressional office over Zoom. Winners will be drawn and notified by email on June 1.

Thank you for taking part in the change we need for future generations.
